Choosing a Wix agency or an independent developer

The right choice depends on your project and the support you need. This guide explains what to consider when hiring for a Wix website or custom functionality. I'm Zain, the developer behind Nexlabs Studio. I work directly with businesses and also provide white label development support to agencies.

What a Wix agency actually does

A Wix agency's job isn't just “building a website on Wix.” It's knowing which parts of the Wix platform actually fit a given project, and building the parts a template can't provide. That covers design (Wix Studio or the classic Editor), custom functionality (Velo), technical SEO, and, when a project genuinely outgrows Wix, knowing when to build somewhere else instead.

The difference between hiring an agency and building it yourself usually isn't whether Wix “can” do something. It almost always can, in some form. It's whether the result looks custom or templated, whether the CMS is structured around your actual content, and whether the functionality holds up once real users and real data are on it, not just in a demo.

Platform experience matters once a project gets past a simple content site. A business owner may be comfortable making design and content decisions, while a role-based dashboard's data model, a booking flow's pricing logic, or a migration's URL mapping can benefit from specialist review. Ask agencies and independent developers for relevant examples and how they test those decisions before launch.

Wix Editor vs Wix Studio vs Velo: when you need each

These aren't three competing products; they're three layers of the same platform, and most real projects use more than one.

  • The classic Wix Editor: fast, template-driven, good for a straightforward content site where speed to launch matters more than design control.
  • Wix Studio: independent breakpoints, real design variables, and a custom CMS, built for a site that needs to look genuinely custom and hold up across many pages over time. Most of what I build runs here.
  • Velo, Wix's development layer, for anything beyond design and content: custom databases, role-based dashboards, bookings and payments with real logic, and integrations with the tools a business already runs on.

What I build

I offer website and application development through Nexlabs Studio, covering custom design, CMS setup, application logic, technical SEO, integrations, and web and mobile apps:

  • Wix Studio and Wix Editor websites: design, build, and a CMS your team can actually run.
  • Velo development, custom functionality: databases, dashboards, member areas, bookings, payments, integrations.
  • Wix SEO and speed: technical SEO and Core Web Vitals work, built for how Wix actually renders and indexes.
  • Custom MERN web apps: React, Node.js, MongoDB, and Next.js, for the rare project Wix genuinely can't hold.
  • Flutter app development: iOS and Android from one codebase.
  • AI chatbots and apps: assistants that answer from your own documents and data.

How projects run

Every project starts with a call about what the site or app actually needs to do, followed by a scope and fixed price in writing. We agree on the requirements and discuss any additions before changing the scope. You get weekly previews on a real, working link, and you discuss the requirements and review the build directly with me. When considering any provider, ask who will handle implementation, feedback, and day-to-day communication; arrangements vary.

Payment is split 50% deposit to begin and 50% on launch, with larger builds split into milestones instead so you're never paying in full for work that isn't finished. When the project ships, the code, content, and accounts are yours outright: nothing is licensed back to me or held hostage to a continuing contract. See the full breakdown on the homepage's process section for what each stage actually looks like.

Pricing ranges

Real tiers, used as starting points before a project-specific quote:

  • Fixes from $50. For a bug fix, small feature, or small Wix Studio or Velo task.
  • Launch from $800. For a new business site up to 8 pages, fully custom design, technical SEO, and 30 days of support.
  • Growth from $1,500. For a site plus the systems behind it: CMS or custom backend, bookings, payments, or a member area, integrations.
  • Custom: Let's talk. For web apps, dashboards, and larger builds, including MERN and AI work.

Agency vs independent developer vs DIY: what to consider

The right choice depends on the project. Compare scope, relevant examples, implementation and communication arrangements, support, and the written quote. Cost, speed, and direct access to a developer vary by provider.

  • DIY: can suit a straightforward content site if you have time to set up and maintain it. You handle design, content, testing, and launch decisions yourself, and may need specialist help for custom functionality or integrations.
  • Independent developer: can suit a clearly scoped website or application when you want to discuss the requirements and review implementation directly with the person doing the work. Check the developer's relevant skills, capacity, availability, and arrangements for support or specialist input; these vary by individual and scope.
  • Agency: can bring together design, development, content, SEO, and project management for work that needs several specialisms. Ask which roles are included, who will build the project, whether you can speak with that developer, and how changes and support are handled. Pricing, timelines, capacity, and communication arrangements vary by agency.

So which one is actually right for you

If the site is simple and you have time to build and maintain it, DIY may fit. For a site that needs a CMS, role-based dashboards, booking or payment logic, integrations, or a migration, look for examples of similar work and ask how the provider will handle scope, testing, handover, and support. An independent developer may cover your full scope, while an agency may offer several specialists; check the actual arrangement rather than relying on the label. If you want to work with me, we can review your requirements and agree which parts I can take on before you decide.
